Our Dallas Public Library needs your support this year as never before. The role of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library is critical to offsetting unprecedented proposed cuts to our city’s budget – cuts which will mean the loss of millions of dollars in library funding.
The sole mission of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library is to support the library system. Since we began in 1950 our impact has been enormous:
- Organized the campaign to build the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library
- Led the way in the creation of 26 branches throughout the City of Dallas
- Funded two Bookmobiles that deliver library services directly to Dallas neighborhoods
- Continues the floor by floor renovation of the Central Library
- Developed one of the finest rare book collections housed in a public library
- Generates grants and scholarships for the devoted library staff
- Provides funding for programs vital to Dallas citizens of all ages
Private support of our library system has a long tradition in Dallas. Our first dedicated public library was funded by a gift from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie along with matching monies contributed by local supporters. Our city fathers knew then, as we know now, that a strong and vibrant library system is at the heart of Dallas’ continued growth and prosperity.
